Why hire a professional photographer?

You just bought a good camera, right? So.... you should be able to take great pictures, right? Now, I am not going to rain on anyone's parade here, many have taken fabulous photos, but having good equipment is only a small part of the picture taking process. It is like saying "I have really good brushes, so I should be able to paint a masterpiece" or "I have a soufflé pan, so I can be a chef" or "This text book will make me a great teacher! "
It is not the equipment that makes the professional, it is what the professional does with it. Having the right equipment is necessary, yes, but there is so much more to it; especially today, where the learning curve with digital photography is pretty steep to achieve professional level photographs. 

Professional photographers spend countless hours studying the light, their camera equipment,  thick Photoshop manuals, reading professional forums, dissecting other photographers work; not to mention the formal education in composition, artistic design, graphic design, lighting, F-stops and apertures, ISO and more!
We do this because we love what we do and it keeps us fresh.

Our eyes have been trained to see how the light falls on a subject and to express that light to create something beautiful for you. We can visualize our colorful world in black and white and make decisions that will best capture the scene. We have learned to anticipate the emotion of the event so that you can always remember that one moment in time that will never return.

The beauty of creating a memory

I had the privilege of photographing Angela and her 3 month old. Baby S. was just beautiful and precious. Angela let me and my new assistant in her lovely home and she showed me around. She had hand picked some beautiful outfits for baby S to wear, but when she got the little pink one with the delicate fabric and said, "This was mine as a little girl." I knew we were definitely going to use that one. Then next to it were some blankets and a oh-so-soft and nubby mint green blanket was described as hand made by a Grandmother. As we moved through the house from living room, to bed rooms to nursery, we came to the den where we passed an old antique rocker that the Grandmother who made the blanket was rocked! What a treasure! I made a mental note that this must be in the photograph. Then we made our way out to a beautiful backyard with soft sunshine and I knew we had a great location. So I moved the antique rocker that once rocked the Grandmother and the handmade blanket knitted by hand by the Grandmother outside to the lush green setting in the backyard and brought out Angela and with sweet little baby S. in her mothers baby dress we made a memory not just a picture! I hope Liz Ann and William keep allowing me experiment with the different possible ways of displaying and marketing my photography. It is a lot of fun and definitely a technical challenge. First I learned how to set up a domain name, design a blog, actually blog and upload photos too. Today I have created a slide show of their engagement photos and will atempt to upload it here. I hope everyone enjoys watching and will come back for other shows, pictures and muses as I muddle my way through this technology thing. Next step a Web Site!

Wedding excitement is in the air

Liz Anne is is very special to us and we have loved seeing her grow up to be such a stylish and cheeky young woman. As I take her engagement photos I can't help but remember back to those days of the joy and excitement of creating a life with someone you love so much! In these photos you can really see the love that William and Liz Anne have for each other! The has been a lot of talk about the hyper-involved 'Bridezilla' and that stereotype is the polar opposite of Liz Anne. She captures a balance of joy, poise, and hope and I think I captured some of that in this shoot. More to come next Saturday!

Taking time to create something is good therapy!

Photography is something I do everyday but I don't get to share it everyday. The business of life gets in the way and I end up with stacks of laundry instead of stacks of photographs. I have found though that if I don't allow myself the time to  photograph, play and enjoy the creative process I get cranky!   Just ask my husband! So I have promised myself and him that I will post more here as a way to carve out some creative time. They may be slices of life of our family or my clients so check back often as you just may see someone you know! As always, I hope you enjoy and let me know what you think!

The Beginning......

This is a new endeavor for me and the beginning of sharing my photography with you. Can we say scary and exciting at the same time?  I have always kept my passion on the down-low; maybe sharing it with those whom I have photographed but never this public. I absolutely love photography, all photography. It is an art form for me that expresses a captured moment in life. That moment will never happen again and that split second capture is not only art but becomes a piece of treasure for me more valuable than gold or diamonds. Photographs tell a story, evoke memories, inspire ideas and creativity, but mostly photographic art make us feel. It is the emotions of the moment that I want to capture, remember and share. That is why I love photography.

Most of what I do here will be my personal favorites and I would love to know what you think. I am no expert but I love to learn, so the more  you share the more I learn. I hope you enjoy what you see and come back often.

This first photo represents a lot of beginnings. The beginning of my little girl's life, the beginning of having three children, the beginning of learning digital photography. I thought it would be perfect to begin my blog with this one.
